A vicariate is a group of parishes within a diocese defined by geographic area for the purposes of administration in support of the bishop’s ministry.
The Diocese of Pittsburgh’s 60 parishes are sectioned into 2 Regions: the North Vicariate and the South Vicariate.
Each vicariate is guided by a regional vicar. Within his respective vicariate, a regional vicar represents the bishop to the people and the people to the bishop. He becomes the “eyes and ears” of the bishop and for faithful.
The North Vicariate is comprised of 33 parishes. Very Reverend Joseph R. McCaffrey serves as its Regional Vicar. The South Vicariate is comprised of 27 parishes, with Very Reverend David G. Poecking assigned as the Regional Vicar.
If your sacramental information is over 70 years old, or if the parish at which the sacrament was celebrated is now closed, the records are located at the diocesan Archives & Records Center. On the Archives & Records Center home page, there is a Personal Records Request box. To check on or request your records, click here.
