Last week, 60,000 people from all over our country and beyond came to Indianapolis to celebrate the center of our Catholic faith—the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the most sacred part of our faith. It was instituted by Jesus at the Passover Meal which became The Last Supper.
On Friday evening, as part of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Paris, a parody of The Last Supper was deliberately presented as entertainment. For Catholics, and by extension to all people of other Christian traditions. It was an insult. But much more, it was a sacrilege!
As a prelude to a time-tested event meant to bring people all over the world together, the parody was broadcast throughout the world. It was an assault on the sacredness of the sacred. Sacrilege is evil. Always and in all ways!
