Parish Social Minister, full time Mary, Queen of Peace/St. Teresa of Kolkata
Minimum Qualifications: EDUCATION • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in social services, human relations, adult education, or related field, with a working knowledge of principles of Catholic social teaching. • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in community organizing, parish social ministry or a related area. • Active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Catholic Church. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written to facilitate meetings, conduct oral presentations, or write documents, grant applications, and/or reports. • Strong organizational skills. • Proficient in Microsoft Office Business Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint). • Knowledge of the Catholic Church including familiarity with its structures, functions and institutions and ability to work with clergy at all Church levels. • Commitment to the Gospel, Catholic Social Teaching, and discipleship. • Understanding of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, Vatican II documents, and familiarity with Catholic Theology. • Excellent skills in building relationships with people of diverse cultures. • Fluent in Spanish preferred. SUMMARY OF JOB: The Parish Social Minister, under the direction of the Pastor, cooperates in the primary responsibility will be to infuse Catholic social teaching and the Church’s social justice perspective into all aspects of Catholic life in the parish. The person will equally split their time between St. Teresa of Kolkata and Mary, Queen of Peace.
ROUTINE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Design, develop, and oversee an effective parish social ministry. • Participate in planning, evaluating, and setting goals and objectives for the parish social ministry program. • Convene clergy, parish staff, and volunteers on a regular basis, especially those involved in social ministry, for education, information, networking and support through conferences, meetings, and workshops. • Integrate support for community organizations with education about poverty and injustice by promoting programs offered by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) to raise awareness of poverty in the parish and the Diocese of Pittsburgh, connecting that awareness and reflection into concrete actions for justice. • Utilize resources of the USCCB and Catholic Relief Services to integrate global solidarity and social justice into the parish social ministry program. • Develop a communication strategy with the assistance of the Director of Parish Engagement by producing parish bulletin announcements, social media posts, informational publications, parish mailings, and other communications on the parish social ministry. • Work collaboratively with the clergy, other staff, and volunteers, convening committees as necessary, to support the work of the ministry. • Collaborate with the St. Vincent de Paul, Ladies of Charity, Teresa’s Outreach, Casa SanJose and the Catholic Hispanic and Deaf Communities of the Parishes. • Additional coordination with Parish Ministry groups including, but not limited to: Nursing Homes, AA Groups, Bereavement Support • Coordinate outreach in the neighborhood and collaborate with local non-profits. • Submit required reports to the Pastor and Diocesan offices in a timely manner.
